Handicapped
Welcome to Handicapped, where I want to introduce you to and take you through the many real life situations experienced by a handicapped person, from a first person viewpoint. That’s me, by the way! So you’ll be getting it straight from the horse’s mouth rather than from someone who only thinks they know what they’re talking about.
Ok, let’s get one thing straight from the get go.
I am a straight talking guy, which sorta makes me non-politically correct. I believe wholeheartedly in free speech and its what living in a free country is all about, or at least it’s supposed to be. So you’re gonna get it straight from the heart and not twisted round the bush like I’m hearing more and more of these day.
Nor do I even want to hear from folks who are too embarrassed to say what’s on their mind. Like why should someone be too embarrassed to call me a handicapped person because I need a wheelchair to get around? Like, they are embarrassed? I really hate it when folks get so scared that they feel they have to call me “a person with disabilities” like I’m some kinda porcelain figure that’ll break if I get upset.
Hello! I do not get upset about what I am. I am a handicapped man, pure and simple, so that’s the way it is, that’s the best way to describe me and that’s how I want to be described.
Ok, we got that straight? Good.
Now, what I’ll be talking about in here is situations that I find myself in where a wheelchair won’t go and normal folks can and it just needs highlighting. I’m not some whinger, so I’m not gonna cry if I can’t get my chair up a damn step if I gotta visit the john. Although it’d be swell if I could get to the john before I pee my pants, know what I’m saying?
I’ll talk about some of the things that make my life easier despite my small problem. That’ll include stuff like my home and its layout and design, stairs, bathroom etc. I’ll also talk about a powered scooter I use for short trips around town and a specially adapted handicap van I have to get to places further away. There’s be stuff on accessibility options that exist and some that I’d like to see exist. And all in all, it’ll be a positive experience, if a little rough around the edges, like me!
So if you can stand the heat and ain’t gonna get all squeamish about my choice of words here and there, then I might just be able to provide you with an entertaining read on a subject that is close to my own heart, for obvious reasons and will give those of you to whom it is not a better understanding of what is involved here.
Thanks,
Handicapped (Hell, I ain’t telling you my real name!)
