Depression Treatment Centers

Depression treatments centers offer the promise of relief to the thousands of people who suffer from depression on a daily basis. But can these specialty psychological service centers really deliver on their promise?

What to look for at a depression treatment center: the primary focus of the treatment center should not be prescription remedies for depression. The psychiatric treatment of depression is not terribly effective and takes a long time to work in those cases where it is effective. So a treatment center is really unnecessary if this is the primary mode of treatment.

The focus should be on engaging in psychotherapy and building skill to combat depression over the short and long term. There are many ways that you can do this provided that you receive adequate assistance from the treatment staff. That is why you want to make sure that at least one fully trained psychologist is seeing you regularly, because psychologists receive extra training in clinical assessment that can help them to understand the nature of your difficulties and to prescribe adequate treatment.

You can ask about the success rate of treatment at any center for depression treatment, and if they are not comfortable providing an answer then I would suggest that they may not be providing the most effective services. Many mental health counselors are still focused on their pet theories more than on providing results for their patients. If you want to be in therapy for a long time, then these types of psycholohy counselors may be for you.

But if you want to get better, then you will have better results from working with a psychotherapist who is consistently seeking to achieve results for his or her patients. If the psychotherapists available to you at a dedicated depression treatment center provide treatment from this type of perspective, and they are able to provide a good percentage of their patients with relief, then you have found a quality depression treatment program.
